SPEECH RECOGNITION CURRICULUM:  Stages of Training 

This web site provides a Speech Recognition Curriculum or Guide in the form of an online checklist for training.  This checklist forms the basis of an hierarchical approach to training the skills needed for using the Dragon Naturally speaking speech recognition program.  (Support for other programs to be added depending on demand).

This curriculum checklist provides a suggested framework for learning how to use speech recognition.  The checklist provides a column of checkboxes for checking off once an item has been completed  as well as a date section for indicating when the user has completed or mastered each item.  

Note that in the checklist curriculum, links are provided to the online Dragon Naturally speaking manual, indicated by a .  Clicking on the arrow will take you to the manual.  You need to navigate to the page shown next to the link (it is not possible to link to specific page numbers in the manual).

Note: The live, online speech recognition forms are part of our Custom Typing Training web site.  They require an account so that information on the forms can be stored for each user.

Stage 1.  Basics and Introduction to speech recognition
Information and descriptions about speech recognition, features and benefits.  Preliminary information before users begins training voice files.
Stage 2 Initial Voice Training
The first voice enrollment and training required by the program.  In this step, the user creates a user name, sets up the microphone, runs the audio setup wizard and then reads one or more training passages presented by the program. 
Stage 3 Basic Dictation
Some of the most essential information to get started with dictation.  In this stage, users learn how to dictate line-by-line sentences for a visual representation of the text being placed on the page.  In this section, some basic exercises for practice are presented in online forms.  Links are provided to line-by-line sentences and longer paragraphs for copying.  In addition, a form with a blank area is provided for creative writing dictation.  These forms can be filled in with voice and printed out.

A list of basic commands is provided as part of a structured curriculum to ensure that users learn the most essential commands for basic dictation.

Stage 4 More Advanced Dictation and other functions
In this stage, users should be familiar enough with the basics of using Naturally Speaking and how speech recognition works, to gain benefit from the excellent interactive tutorial that comes with the program.  

This stage covers the more complex and involved aspects of using the program, as well as more information about dictation.  

Stage 5 Curriculum Integration or Using Speech Recognition in the workplace
The ultimate goal and outcome of learning how to use speech recognition is to improve your performance and productivity in terms of text entry and overall computer use.  Once the basic training in terms of how the program works, how to dictate and use commands has been achieved, integration into your real life school or work environment is the final step.

Learning how to use Naturally Speaking with multiple applications is essential.  This stage presents steps to using speech recognition in many of the major applications and functions that people use in their work and school environments..
